York Army Museum tells the stories of British Army soldiers from 1685 to the present day.  We are home to two regimental collections: The Royal Dragoon Guards collection and The Royal Yorkshire Regiment collection.

We also hold the collection of their antecedents:

  • The 4th Royal Irish Dragoon Guards, The 5th (Princess Charlotte of Wales’s) Dragoon Guards, The 6th (Inniskilling) Dragoons, The 7th (The Princess Royal’s) Dragoon Guards, The 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards and The 4th/7th Royal Dragoon Guards.
  • The East Yorkshire Regiment (Duke of York’s Own), The West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales’s Own) and The Prince of Wales’s Own Regiment of Yorkshire.
Military khaki jacket with leather belt, brass buttons, brass shoulder badges and brass collar badges. Collar badges shaped as an 8 points-star. The same star is engraved on the buttons. The jacket has 4 large pockets. 2 on the torso and two at the bottom of the jacket. Above the left torso pocket, 4 medal ribbons bar surmounted by a Royal Air Force badge.
On the left, the Queen’s South Africa Medal. This silver medal shows a crowned and veiled effigy of Queen Victoria, facing left. The ribbon is made of vertical bands: red, dark blue, orange, dark blue and red. This medal has 5 silver clasps reading, from the bottom of the ribbon to the top: Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal, South Africa 1901, South Africa 1902. On the right of the picture, the Polar Medal. This octagonal silver medal shows the effigy of George the Fifth facing left. The ribbon is plain white and the medal has one silver clasp reading ‘Antarctic 1910-13’
Golden metal helmet with white and red plume. The helmet is highly ornamented with leaves and flowers. On the front of the helmet the gold and silver badge of the 5th Dragoon Guards. The helmet shows the marks of Russian sabre cuts across the top of the badge.
Rectangular black flag. A white rose of Yorkshire is embroidered in the centre. In the upper right corner, the badge of the Royal Navy is embroidered: a red anchor with wrapped cable. In the upper left corner, a shield bearing the letter H in green and the number 4 in red.
Square silver metal box. The lid is open. A plug socket can be seen on the front side of the box with a label above reading ‘Warning. Switch off before disconnecting’. Two other labels can be seen on the right side of the box but the angle of the picture makes them undecipherable. On the front side, at the top, two closing mechanism to close the box securely.

As written in our Collections Development Policies, the purpose of York Army Museum is to collect, document, and preserve objects/archives/stories related to our regiments. Unsolicited object donations

Unsolicited object donations are items that have been left at or posted to York Army Museum without prior arrangement and consultation with the collections team.  We strongly urge that you get in touch with the collections team before bringing in or posting objects to the museum. Unsolicited objects that arrive at the museum will be treated as gifts and will result in complete ownership being transferred to the museum, who may dispose of the objects as appropriate.
